HOW MANY MARITIME PIRACY CASES HAS COMPASS  MANAGED?
Compass personnel have combined experience of 12 maritime piracy cases as lead consultants, from the start until the end of each case, on both the East and West coasts of Africa since 2007.
 

FROM WHAT COUNTRIES HAVE COMPASS STAFF MANAGED MARITIME PIRACY CASES?
Compass staff have deployed to owners and managing agents offices in China, Denmark, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Nigeria, and Vietnam to advise from the start of the piracy case until the safe resolution of the case in question. Compass staff have also deployed to Egypt, Pakistan and Jordan to brief families of hostage crews. Two Compass consultants were the first westerners to deploy to mainland China to advise the Chinese owners of a Chinese flagged ship taken by Somali pirates.

HAS COMPASS WORKED WITH LONDON BASED MARITIME LAWYERS?
Yes.
Compass has worked with both Holman Fenwick Willan LLP and Ince and Co.
Stephen Askins of Ince and James Gosling of HFW are able and willing to act as referees.

 

WHO DOES COMPASS SUPPORT?

HAVE COMPASS STAFF HANDLED ‘ON LAND‘ KIDNAPS IN SOMALIA & WEST AFRICA
Yes.
Individual Compass consultants have handled on land kidnap cases in Somalia and West Africa including ship to shore kidnap.
Compass is also one of the few response consultancies with staff who have actually travelled inside Somalia and West Africa.

DOES COMPASS BASE AFRICAN PIRACY AND KIDNAP NEGOTIATIONS ON THE LATIN AMERICAN NEGOTIATION MODEL?
No.
Compass believes that regional experience in Africa and the Middle East is more relevant than Latin American experience in terms of the management of African piracy cases and African on land kidnaps. As a result Compass has an exemplary track record in the good management of piracy and kidnap cases in Africa.



WHAT OTHER KIDNAPS HAVE THEY HANDLED?
Compass consultants have a combined experience of handling more than 80 kidnap cases. This includes cases in Afghanistan, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Iraq, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Mexico, Panama, Somalia, Venezuela and Yemen. Compass staff negotiated the release of 11 hostages in 2014; and 4 hostages so far (as at the end of March) in 2015.


DOES COMPASS HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF CONTACTS? 
Yes.

Compass maintains contact with a pre-screened and selected network of facilitators and service providers with proven track records in supporting maritime piracy, kidnap and extortion resolution operations in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
For example - ransom delivery teams, interpreters, local facilitators and logistic providers.


DO COMPASS STAFF OPERATE FROM STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES?
Yes.
All Compass consultants are carefully screened and selected, trained in house, and follow standard protocols.

 

HOW MANY CONSULTANTS DEPLOY ON A CASE?
Normally two consultants will manage a case on a 21 to 25 day rotation. The lead consultant will normally be replaced at the focal point by a fresh and rested follow on consultant. The two consultants will remain assigned to the case until safe resolution is achieved.
In complicated cases or long cases a third consultant may also deploy.


WHAT OPERATIONAL SUPPORT DO THEY HAVE WHEN DEPLOYED?
Compass retains a UK based security and terrorism research analyst with many years of experience of providing dedicated information and research support to deployed consultants on piracy and kidnap cases. He is a former British Army Intelligence Corps Warrant Officer. He was part of an intelligence team supporting British Special Forces in the First Gulf War. He has been deployed to some 40 countries and has operational experience in Northern Ireland and the Balkans conflicts. He has also conducted security and risk assessments, research and security training for businesses, NGOs and Government agencies.
 

HAVE COMPASS STAFF HANDLED SERIOUS EXTORTION CASES?
Yes.
Compass staff  have handled more than 20 serious extortion, malicious product contamination, and terrorist extortion cases in Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and UK.


HOW MANY IN THE RESPONSE TEAM?
There are five experienced retained consultants in the Compass response team available for worldwide deployment. A team of five allows a capability to manage three live cases, simultaneously.
 

WHAT IS THEIR BACKGROUND?
All are former military officers; two also have service in law enforcement, one as a detective superintendent specialising in kidnap resolution. All have implemented and managed intricate asset protection and crisis management projects in areas considered hostile for business purposes. All have prior successful leadership experience in low intensity conflict areas in two or more of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, the Balkans and Northern Ireland. 

WHAT LANGUAGES DO THEY SPEAK?
The team includes fluent speakers of Spanish, Portuguese, German and English; colloquial French is also spoken. The team can also call upon trained and vetted Arab speaking communicators for kidnap cases in the Middle East. 
 

WHERE ARE THEY BASED?
One of the Compass consultants is based in Latin America, one in Central Europe and the other three consultants are UK based.


DOES COMPASS HAVE ANY DISPUTES WITH CLIENTS?  THREATENED OR ACTUAL? 
No.

Yes.
